Comm 314: Final Reflection

Writer's picture: Antanaja Wilson Antanaja Wilson

Before creating this site, I did not have much of a professional presence online .Most of my social media is used primarily for entertainment purposes. Without a doubt ,after completing my portfolio I believe I made myself more appealing to potential employers. While, having just a normal resume is nice I think having this portfolio implies that I'm willing to go the extra mile when it comes to my work. Being able to really show businesses my potential.

Equally important, is my favorite part about my portfolio, which is the design. When I first began creating it, I wanted to make sure it had a sophisticated ,yet young and vibrant feel to it. In the end I think it does just that. In addition to that is my blog. I love my post are very different from one another. It's as if the viewers are along for each course ,you might even learn something.

Naturally, when creating something you will run into some challenges. My main challenge was choosing the right material to add. When it comes to impressing potential employers, you want to make sure a great first impression. That is why making sure I added my best work to my portfolio was very important. Even certain blog post had to be edited and some deleted.

Nonetheless I did have fun making it. However, if had to give future students advice on making and portfolio I would say take your time. This portfolio is not something you can do at the very last minute. Especially, if your someone who really wants to use it in the work force. Also ,make sure to go back and edit. In the moment we may not notice certain errors which is why going back, and reviewing is important.

Surprisingly, the most interesting part of this course would have to be "Gendered Differences in Nonverbal Communication". Before that module I don't think I realized how much my generation ignores gender rules. Especially in 2021 where generations like mine believe most gender rules and expectations are outdated. For example , the idea that women are supposed to sit up straight like a “lady” and men can slouch and be comfortable. Another example would be the amount of personal space women and men usually like . I think this has completely changed over the years. Without a doubt woman are way more reserved and guarded than they were before. Lastly ,this course also gave me a deeper understanding of the difference between sex and gender. .

After ,completing my popular press analysis I learned how important nonverbal communication really is to the work force. I also learned new methods for creating a comfortable more inclusive workspace. In addition to that how much peer reviewed research effects popular press. Most of the material that ends up in popular press stems from research.

Being that I’m currently a communication major with a concentration in PR I think this course will definitely help me in the future . I plan on eventually owning a PR firm. Having tools like this in areas like nonverbal communication can really help me advance my career. From simple things such as : making good impressions and being more welcoming. To things a bit more serious like interacting with future employees. Besides work I think this course is beneficial in our everyday life. We use nonverbal communication when interacting with our partners, friends, and family. Knowing how to properly express yourself nonverbally can have a major impact on your relationships. All in all, this has been a very intriguing course and I will be utilizing some of the skills I learned going forward.
